Most iGaming conferences and events sell you a market. SiGMA Africa sells you a whole continent that’s still deciding what its market will look like.
That is the main reason why operators should not miss this trip. From 15 to 17 February 2027, casino brands, suppliers, affiliates, and regulators will meet at GrandWest in Cape Town. Many of the people who will write Africa's next gaming rules will be in the same building.
We have spent years helping operators launch and scale in very different markets. Below, we explain what SiGMA Africa is, why it matters, and what benefits you can bring out from there.
What is SiGMA Africa?
SiGMA Africa is the largest dedicated iGaming conference that is held in Africa. It is included in the events list of SiGMA, which also covers Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East.
The summit will gather all participants from the value chain in one place. You will be able to meet the operators, game studios, aggregators, platforms, payments companies, affiliates, investors and officials.
The 2027 edition will be the fifth event in the summit series. It will return to Cape Town after four editions that grew steadily year by year.
SiGMA Africa 2027 at a glance
One figure stands out. In 2026, 92% of delegates said they were likely to come back. In an industry crowded with events, that kind of loyalty is rare.
The dates have also shifted. The 2026 edition ran in early March. For 2027, SiGMA moved its Africa and UAE events to February and March to fit the regional calendar better.
What Makes SiGMA Africa Different?
SiGMA Africa is something much more than a smaller copy of a European exhibition. Its value lies in the possibility of meeting with the people who regulate the market, not only those who sell to it.
Regulators are part of the program
The Gaming Regulators Africa Forum (GRAF) will be taking place simultaneously with the summit. The forum provides a platform to discuss licensing standardization, consumer protection, and cross-border collaboration.
In 2026, over 60 dignitaries participated in guided business-government tours at the exhibition. Representatives were sent from provinces of South Africa, as well as from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, Senegal, Botswana, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Seychelles.
There were more than just ministers officiating the opening ceremony at the expo. Several delegations brought along people responsible for licenses and supervision in everyday life. For the operator, this is a rare opportunity to know how the regulations will be implemented.
Official backing from key authorities
The 2027 edition is endorsed by gambling authorities in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa. That support signals one thing clearly: these regulators want a dialogue with the industry.
A smaller room, a better ratio
Around 3,000 delegates is modest compared with SiGMA's flagship events. That is an advantage. Decision-makers are easier to find, and meetings feel less rushed.
SiGMA itself pitches the region as a growing, multilingual market with less competition than saturated tier-one markets. For brands that want to build a position early, the timing matters.
Community and social impact
Africa is one of the main focus areas of the SiGMA Foundation. The awards night includes a charity auction, and the 2026 event featured the first Women in Gaming Africa conference. These sessions are good places for relaxed, genuine conversations.
Why 2027 is the pivotal Year to be in the room
The 2027 conference lands at a turning point, especially for South Africa; if there is a single storyline to pay heed to in Cape Town, it is this one.
South Africa has drawn a hard line on casino content
Sports betting is legal in South Africa through provincial bookmaker licenses. Online casino gaming is not.
For several years, many bookmakers have been allowed to offer slots, crash games, and table games as “fixed-odds” bets until the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled the practice unlawful in October 2025.
In February 2026, the National Gaming Board informed provincial authorities that remote gaming servers cannot be considered legal.
The bookmaking business was given time until June 30, 2026, to stop using casino-related RGS systems. February 2027 will be the first SiGMA Africa event that takes place following the period granted to gambling establishments.
Expect this to shape many hallway conversations. Operators will compare how their sportsbook revenue held up. Suppliers will talk about where casino content can still legally go.
The Remote Gambling Bill is still unknown
The Remote Gambling Bill, which is on the table, is intended to allow for online gambling and iGaming licensing for both businesses and suppliers on a national scale. There will be a public consultation scheduled for the third quarter of 2026.
Some regions, such as the Western Cape and Gauteng, have been eager to have regulations for the gambling industry introduced, as there is a lot of money to be made.
The consensus from our side is straightforward: the first operators who will benefit and make a profit during the new era of online gambling will be those who have prepared in advance.
Beyond South Africa: one continent, many markets
It is a mistake to talk about "the African market". Each country has its own rules, payments and player habits.
A few patterns run across almost all of them:
- Mobile-only, not mobile-first. Many players never touch a desktop. Lightweight games that load fast on entry-level Android phones win.
- Data cost is a conversion lever. Some operators report sharp growth after offering data-free access. Game file size matters more than in Europe.
- Mobile money is the bank. M-Pesa and MTN MoMo are the default payment rails in much of East and West Africa.
- Crash and instant games travel well. Short sessions, low stakes and simple mechanics fit how people play.
- Localisation goes deeper than language. A game that works in Johannesburg may fall flat in Dakar or Abidjan.
What We Tell Operators Before an African Show
We work with operators across very different regulated markets. Therefore, we have created a list of important questions for them that will encourage partners to ask suppliers they meet in Cape Town and help them hold productive conversations and well-informed decisions:
1. “Can you switch on or off the content depending on the jurisdiction?”
This is the key question that needs to be asked after the RGS crackdown. What is acceptable in Kenya might be illegal elsewhere.
Your content stack should allow you to control the lobby on a market basis, with no further integration necessary each time. Request a live demonstration of geo-level controls instead of a PowerPoint presentation.
2. “How heavy are your games?”
Find out the weight and download speed of your games when installed on a mid-range Android phone using a 3G network. Lots of suppliers have never monitored it.
If a game takes about ten seconds to download while the player is taking a bus in Nairobi, the game will be abandoned.
3. "Which local payment rails are already live?"
"Mobile money support" can mean many things. Ask which providers, in which countries, and how fast withdrawals settle.
Fast payouts build trust faster than any bonus. If you are reviewing your setup, our overview of payment gateway integration explains what a flexible payments layer should cover.
4. "What does your portfolio look like for this region?"
A catalogue of thousands of games is only useful if the right ones surface. Look for crash and instant games, low minimum stakes, and football-themed titles.
Also, ask about local-currency support and low-denomination bet steps. A minimum bet set for euros can price out a whole market. When you compare suppliers, browse a broad casino game portfolio first, then shortlist by region.
Details Most Guides Will Not Tell You
The summit falls during Ramadan. The beginning of Ramadan is expected to be around the 8 February, 2027. Some of the delegates who come from Senegal, Northern Nigeria or coastal East Africa might be fasting. It is a good idea to arrange afternoon meetings instead of lunches. Usually, the invitation for an evening iftar dinner is warmly accepted.
The day before, it is Valentine’s Day. The 14th of February is among the busiest days for restaurants. If a dinner is planned for the team or the customers, the reservation should be made in advance.
Plan to stick around for the last day of the summit. In 2026, the regulators’ forum called it a time. It should be noted that some of the people leave before it and fail to come to the forum. If you stay, you can have more time in communicating with the officials.
The fame of East African football is going to grow. Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are going to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027. Moreover, their regulatory authorities support SiGMA Africa. Expect plenty of talk about tournament-driven acquisition in those markets.
After a month, marketing campaigns in the region continue, and the AIBC Eurasia summit rolls in Dubai with events taking place from 15th to 17th March 2027. Plan both trips together to cover Africa and the region effectively, thus offering an opportunity for reusing research on meetings.
The rules of advertising are getting stricter in the region as the advertising regulator of South Africa adds a gambling supplement to regulations, and regulatory bodies are working together on advertising supervision. Therefore, while planning marketing in this region, ask your partners about their compliance policies.
Sports stars attract people's interest. The 2026 edition was marked by the presence of former stars such as Robert Pirès and Claude Makélélé. Their attire is helpful for networking purposes, so keep an eye on the event's side schedule.
Interested in the African Market? Your Next Move is Cape Town
SiGMA Africa may not be the biggest show on the calendar, but for operators, who are serious about this market, it might be the most important.
The 2027 edition arrives as South Africa redraws its rules and East Africa prepares to host the Africa Cup of Nations. The right conversations in Cape Town can save you months of trial and error.
Go with a plan. Ask harder questions than usual. And stay until the last session.
